UW alumni Dale Slaughter is professional photographer for Boreal Imagery. In addition to his work in fine photography, Dale Slaughter has been an archeologist for over 30 consecutive years. His career in archeology has given Dale the rare opportunity to capture breathtaking images from some of the world's most remote locations, a few of which hold significant historical value as the sites no longer exist. Artist's statement from the Alaska Spine Institute Show: Images from a Vast Land: Alaska in Black and White "My primary photographic interest is landscapes both with and without man-made objects. I find myself equally attracted to pristine nature and the ghostly appeal of derelict buildings and other artifacts. I work in both color and black and white although I much prefer the built in level of abstraction provided by black and white photography. In the last few years, my black and white work has been exclusively done with large format (4 x 5) cameras; I find that the versatility of large format cameras and the exquisite negative detail obtainable with them is more than adequate compensation for the bulky, heavy and cumbersome nature of the equipment. My images are computer generated from scanned negatives and manipulated with graphics software; manipulation is limited to tonal adjustments and improving image sharpness. I do not digitally remove elements from an image or produce composites using elements from more than one image. Prints are made with an inkjet printer using four shades of black, pigmented ink."
